Australia Zoo didn't cause the demise of the big pinapple. The Nabour bypass of the Bruce Highway killed the big pinapple. Despite it's rather obscure location Steve Irwin was able to promote his zoo effectively to make it a desirable destination. If Aust. Zoo can become a resort style destination it's going to be a bonus to that area of the sunshine coast being, as it were, a bit of a hinterland between Brisbane and the sunshine coast.

Irwin want`s Zoo to have `Disneyland feel`

TERRI Irwin has announced plans to turn Australia Zoo into an international tourist mecca comparable to Disneyland.

At a VIP breakfast at the zoo, the widow of the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin said the zoo on Queensland`s Sunshine Coast would be Irwin-owned well into the future as it expanded with a safari park and accommodation.

"(We) want to be `Destination Australia` - kind of like that Disney feel where a lot of Australians go and see Disneyland and then (ask) what else is there to do?," Ms Irwin said.

"So it will be so exciting for people to come here and be able to see the wildlife, spend the night, stay as long as they want, have the spa treatment and the guided tours and the experience and then be able to lash out and see the rest of Australia."

She said she hoped plans would be complete in three to five years.

"I think it`s interesting that whenever I brought up the strategy of accommodation with Steve he would always say `Don`t even talk to me about that, that`s something that Bindi and Robert are going to have to worry about`," she said.

"We find it just a bit emotional to think ... it`s kind of come to fruition."

She said she was committed to the zoo and its wildlife goals and rumours she would sell the zoo now or in the future had no basis.

"As far as reports that I`m going to sell the zoo I can say that when it comes to rumours and so forth no one really knows how they get started," she said.

She also denied there was a rift in the family behind Steve`s father Bob Irwin`s decision to buy a small property for his own wildlife work.

"I just can assure everyone that I love Bob dearly ... he`s gone through so much grief losing his wife and his only son that I will respectfully just leave it at that," she said.
