Hewitt hopeful of Chile encounter

2.06.2008
LLEYTON Hewitt hopes to represent Australia in their Davis Cup World Group play-off in Chile in September.

The Australian No.1, who places huge importance on representing his country, plans to play the tie but at the moment is focusing on ensuring his troublesome hip recovers in time for Wimbledon.

“It`s a long way away,” Hewitt said of the Davis Cup.

“Obviously my body hasn`t been 100 per cent. I can`t say I`m focusing on it just yet.”

The Chileans will be favourites, featuring reigning Olympic doubles champions Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu, the latter also winning the men`s singles title in Athens in 2004.

“It`s going to be a tough one for both countries,” Hewitt said.

“Both countries, I think, deserve to be seeded in the playoffs, so we probably shouldn`t be playing each other.”

Asked by a Chilean journalist at Roland Garros how he felt about the home nation`s obvious choice of clay, Hewitt kept a poker face.

“Clay is our favourite surface,” was his deadpan reply.

“I don`t know why you guys chose that.”
