Hundreds mark Tiananmen massacre

1.06.2008

HUNDREDS of people marched through Hong Kong today in an annual event to remember victims of China`s 1989 crushing of the democracy movement in Tiananmen Square.

The procession came ahead of the 19th anniversary of the June 4 crackdown and was organised by the Alliance in Support of the Patriotic Democratic Movements of China.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of peaceful protesters and citizens were gunned down in the streets of Beijing in 1989 as the People`s Liberation Army stormed the city, ending six weeks of unprecedented democracy protests.

Before today`s march, pro-democracy Hong Kong legislator Emily Lau called on Beijing to apologise to the victims and conduct an independent inquiry into the massacre.

"This should include recommendations for rehabilitation and compensation for the victims and their families,`` she told local broadcaster RTHK.

"Only then can the healing of the nation begin.``

Unlike in mainland China, the former British colony of Hong Kong allows protests, making it a focus of events to mark the anniversary of the crackdown on the protest, which was focused on Beijing`s giant Tiananmen Square.
