Mum, children die in `gruesome` killing

30.05.2008

A HUSBAND and father, who was among five adults and children found dead in a suburban Calgary home, has become a suspect in the grisly killings that police attribute to domestic violence.

Alerted by a relative, police discovered the bodies of the man, his wife and their two young children, as well as a female tenant, on Wednesday morning. Officials would only describe the crime scene as gruesome.

The children`s one-year-old sister was found alive in the house, located in a well-tended neighbourhood in the Western Canadian city`s northwest, and taken into protective custody.

Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson told CBC Television that "the events are looking towards the male in the house".

He has called the killings a "domestic homicide," but has so far stopped short of labeling them a murder-suicide.

Officials have not identified the dead, but several media outlets reported they were Joshua Lall, a 34-year-old intern at an architectural firm, his wife Alison Lall, 35, and daughters Kristen, 5, and Rochelle, 3. The tenant was reported to be Amber Bowerman, who worked for a college newspaper.

Speaking to reporters after the chief`s comments, Police Inspector Guy Slater said the father, described by neighbours as a friendly family man who was active in the community, was only one possible suspect.

"The chief`s comments still stand. Obviously, the preliminary indicators from yesterday`s investigation have led us down that path and we continue to pursue that as one of many possibilities," Insp Slater said.

Police would not give the likely cause of death, pending autopsy results, nor did they offer details of the crime scene, which left veteran officers struggling to maintain their composure.

Insp Slater said there were signs of violence.

"It was a gruesome scene, and we continue to look after our officers in that regard," he said.

The force has been providing counseling for some of the officers who were there.

Now, he should use that new found wealth to start paying back each and every person he owes money too.... Give him a cardboard box to live in and a change of clothes and let every other cent he earns go back to the people he stole from!!!!!!!!!I bet no one person here who congratulated this criminal lost a cent.....

  • Alan Bond back among wealthiest people
  • Andrew Forrest at number one position
  • James Packer down, Eddie Groves out

FORMER bankrupt and convicted fraudster Alan Bond has rejoined the ranks of Australia`s wealthiest people, after 19 years.

Eight years after being released from jail, Mr Bond has returned to the BRW magazine`s Rich 200 list with a ranking of 157 and a fortune of $265 million built on his overseas mining interests.

He was last on the list in 1989, having previously peaked in 1987 with a fortune of $400m.

"Bond is back," BRW Rich 200 editor John Stensholt said.

"His money is basically coming from mining in Africa – oil and diamonds."

Mr Bond, who was declared bankrupt in 1992, now holds stakes in Madagascar Oil and Lesotho Diamond Corporation, which are at various stages of development.

Mr Stensholt said BRW had undertaken an extensive investigation into Mr Bond`s fortune, and its valuation of him was the minimum.

Mr Bond went from signwriter and real estate developer to corporate high-flier before he was convicted in 1997 of the then biggest corporate fraud in Australia`s history - stripping $1.2 billion from Bell Resources.

He spent just over three years in jail before his release in 2000.

In an interview with British high-society magazine Tatler about two years ago, Mr Bond said the cash would roll in once his African investments hit paydirt.

"I never lost faith in my ability to climb the mountain again," Mr Bond said then.

The Rich 200 list, announced today, also reveals gambling and media tycoon James Packer has surrendered the top spot to Fortescue Mining Ltd chief executive Andrew Forrest.

Mr Forrest has amassed a record fortune of $9.41bn, the biggest in the 25 year history of the Rich 200 list.

Mr Packer, chairman of Consolidated Media Holding Ltd, has dropped to third spot from number one, with his estimated wealth falling to $6.10bn, from $7.25bn last year.

It is the first time in 20 years that a Packer has not headed the Rich 200 list.

Mr Stensholt said Mr Packer`s fortune had declined in line with falls in the share prices of gaming firm Crown and media firm Consolidated Media Holdings, which were created from the splitting of Publishing and Broadcasting last year.

"He has big stakes in both, so Packer`s (fortune) is down due to the whole sharemarket going down really," Mr Stensholt said.

There was also bad news for child care boss Eddie Groves, whose forced sell-off of ABC Learning shares saw him drop out of the list.

Meanwhile, Mr Forrest, whose company only recently began exporting iron ore to China from its Chichester Range project near Port Hedland in WA, has more than doubled his fortune.

Mr Forrest was fifth on the list last year, with $3.89 billion.

Mr Stensholt said Mr Forrest`s future wealth depends on the performance of Fortescue.

"If the company shows any sign of weakness, misses any shipments or costs blow out, then the share price will come down pretty quickly."

Westfield property empire founder Frank Lowy retained second place on the list, although his fortune dropped slightly to $6.30bn from $6.51bn last year.

Australia`s richest woman, iron ore magnate Gina Rinehart, fell one place to fifth, even though her fortune increased to $4.39bn.

BRW still tips Ms Rinehart as a future list leader, as the value of her iron ore tenements are unlocked.

"If the resources boom continues and iron ore prices remain strong, Rinehart could become Australia`s richest person within five years," BRW said.

Ms Rinehart, the daughter of the late mining magnate Lang Hancock, signed a deal in 2006 with global miner Rio Tinto to develop her Hope Downs iron ore mine in Western Australia.

The youngest person to make the rich list is Nathan Tinkler, who at just 32 years old has amassed $426m.

Mr Tinkler last week sold his 10.4 per cent stake in Macarthur Coal to predator ArcelorMittal for about $440m.

The wealthiest list debutants – each worth $991m – are Travers Duncan and Brian Flannery, from Queensland-based coal miner Felix Resources.

The total wealth of the Rich 200 has lifted to $139.6bn, from $127.6bn last year.

The number of individual billionaires has risen to 38, from 30 last year.

Mr Stensholt said much of the wealth of people on the list was being generated by the resources boom, but strong demand for agricultural commodities and rising land prices were also a factor.

"There`s quite a few cattle barons that have come onto the list," Mr Stensholt said.

They include Graeme and Evan Acton of Queensland, who have a combined fortune of $211m, and the McDonald family, which operates a Queensland cattle station, with $209m.

Top ten richest with estimated forturn and area of business:

1. Andrew Forrest, $9.410bn, mining
2. Frank Lowy, $6.300bn, shopping centres
3. James Packer, $6.100bn, media and investment
4. Richard Pratt, $5.480bn, manufacturing
5. Gina Rinehart, $4.390bn, mining
6. Harry Triguboff, $3.250bn, property
7. John Gandel, $3.210bn, property
