Its foreign policy results in changes of government in far off countries and dictates the trade conditions of many others. We sent our own soldiers to a war lead by the US. So yes, a US president can change the world, for better or worse, so that's why people care.

I can't believe that clinton can be sooo selfish by not conceeding a long time ago, dragging this out has done major damage to the Democrats chances all because her ego wouldnt allow her to conceed. Even now she is still asking her supporters if she should...if she can't make this simple decision how the hell was she suppose to run the country...McCann must be laughing his head off with all the infighting....Now theres reports that her team will try to get her on ticket as VP...that wouldbe a HUGE mistake and one i dont even think Obama would consider, maybe if she'd pulled out with dignity a month or so ago but not now....I'm sure he has much better choices in the party than her..She has shown her true colours in this campaign and none of them where that bright...I hope he gets in, its about time they elected someone who wasn't already past retirement age!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!If i could i would vote for Obama..........

  • Obama secures "magic number" of delegates
  • Clinton signals interest in becoming running mate
  • US presidential election: Now it`s Obama v McCain

BARACK Obama has declared victory over Hillary Clinton on the last day of voting in their Democratic primaries race, making history as the first black presidential nominee.

But in a speech to her supporters in New York, Senator Clinton has refused to concede defeat.  "I will be making no decisions tonight," she has said.

She praised Senator Obama and said she would consult with party leaders on "where we go from here", but also called out to her supporters to let her know if they want her to stay in the race.

In a speech in St Paul-Minneapolis, Senator Obama has declared: "I will be the Democratic nominee".

"Tonight we mark the end of one historic journey with the beginning of another - a journey that will bring a new and better day to America," he has said.  "America, this is our moment. This is our time."

He has also paid tribute to Senator Clinton as having "made history" in her campaign.

Excerpts of Senator Obama`s speech were released prior to him taking the stage, but his first personal claim of victory came in a post he sent to his Twitter feed.  "IN St Paul, MN speaking after securing the nomination," he tweeted.

US media counts have Senator Obama passing the magic number of delegates needed to secure the nomination, as Montana and South Dakota voted in the last of a marathon season of primary and caucus contests.

Senator Clinton had a consolation win in South Dakota, while Senator Obama won Montana.

Securing the nomination means Senator Obama, 46, will face Republican candidate John McCain, 71.  Senator McCain has said today that Senator Obama "made a great first impression" but is not willing to make the hard decisions.

Earlier, it was reported that Senator Clinton had told a conference call with New York members of Congress that she would be open to becoming Senator Obama`s vice presidential running mate.

That would be a stunning turnaround for the warring parties, whose personal bitterness has surfaced repeatedly throughout the campaign since the first vote in Iowa in early January.  A "Dream Ticket" pairing would require Senator Obama to agree to bring Senator Clinton on board.

But in his victory speech, Senator Obama has hinted at a role for her in his administration - at the very least in her pet issue of health care.

Inspiration

Senator Obama has said he has improved as a candidate as a result of competing against Senator Clinton and paused to "honour the service" of Senator McCain, a former PoW in Vietnam .

Addressing concerns that the race has left some of the party`s voters divided, Senator Obama said it was now time for Democrats to come together to defeat Senator McCain.  "Let us unite in common effort to chart a new course for America," he said.

He signalled Iraq as a major battleground for the November election, turning to a familiar theme painting a McCain presidency as merely a third term for George W. Bush.

Senator Obama`s decision to hold his victory rally in St Paul-Minneapolis, the city which is also hosting the Republican national convention in September, is highly symbolic of his desire to take the fight to his opponents.  In a poll released today, Senator Obama holds a slight lead over Senator McCain.

While an expected flood of superdelegates towards Senator Obama has yet to materialise, there are whispers in the US Congress that legislators may move quickly now that victory has been declared.
