Newsreader`s son in fatal plane crash

30.05.2008

THE passenger killed when an ultralight plane crashed north-east of Melbourne yesterday was the son of former Nine Network newsreader Brian Naylor.

Matt Naylor, of Kinglake West, was a passenger in the microlight that crashed just after take-off from a property in Coombs Road, Kinglake, about 4.20pm yesterday, suburban newspaper The Diamond Valley Leader reported.

The pilot, aged in his 30s, was in a critical but stable condition in The Alfred hospital`s intensive care unit, hospital spokesman John Heselev said.

He suffered critical head injuries, a broken pelvis, two broken legs and internal injuries.

Police believe the plane reached a height of 30 metres before getting into difficulty and crashing through trees to the ground below, about 500 metres from where it took off.

A man working on a nearby property raised the alarm when he heard the crash, not long after he heard the plane take off, police media spokeswoman Katherine Jess said.

Kinglake West resident Jamie Miller told the Leader he saw Mr Naylor, who was in his 40s, before yesterday`s crash.

"He was a good bloke and well respected in the community,`` Mr Miller said.

Brian Naylor retired as Nine`s chief newsreader at the end of 1998 after a career of more than 40 years in radio and television.

Police and civil aviation authorities will prepare a report for the coroner.
