GUNMEN shot dead five people in a western Kenyan village in an incident believed to be linked to the country`s electoral dispute, police and government officials said.

“Those killed were two men and three women,” a top police commander said.

The deaths brought to at least 10 the number of people killed in violence over the past 24 hours related to the disputed December 27 elections.

Police said the attackers, believed to be members of a tribal militia called Sabaot Land Defence Force, attacked Salama village in Rift Valley province yesterday, opening fire indiscriminately.

“A team of General Service Unit (paramilitary) personnel has been dispatched to the area to quell the tension there,” said Kitale police commander Bernard Mulli.

Area district Commissioner Seif Matata visited the area earlier and confirmed that tension was very high.

“We have been able to station security along the two borders to ensure the attackers to not cause more mayhem,” Mr Matata said.

Police and government sources said the victims of the raid were villagers from tribes which overwhelmingly voted for incumbent President Mwai Kibaki in last month`s election, which the opposition says was rigged.

Since Mr Kibaki was declared the winner of the December 30 poll despite mounting evidence of flaws in the ballot, Kenya has witnessed a surge in ethnic violence.
