GANGLAND lawyer Zarah Garde-Wilson says she is glad her ordeal is over after serious criminal charges were dropped on the eve of her trial.

The young solicitor who has acted for Carl Williams and Tony Mokbel walked free from the County Court after prosecutors said they would not go ahead with four charges of giving false evidence to the Australian Crime Commission, the Herald Sun reported.

A charge of possessing an unregistered gun allegedly belonging to her slain boyfriend Lewis Caine was also dropped late last week.

The case dramatically fell apart this morning when the key witness against her, an informer code named 166, gave evidence in a secret hearing the public were barred from.

Outside court Ms Garde-Wilson - who had a character based on her in the crime series Underbelly - said through her barrister that she was happy it was over and she "just wants her privacy".

The charges alleged that Ms Garde-Wilson lied to the ACC about her knowledge of convicted killer Caine`s gun and that she had spoken to spirits about his murder.

Caine was shot dead in May 2004 by Evangelos Goussis, the man convicted of killing crime patriarch Lewis Moran at the Brunswick Club two months earlier.

Ms Garde-Wilson`s refusal to give evidence against Goussis and another man at their murder trial saw her convicted of contempt of court.

Witness 166 was a gun runner who had been helping gather evidence about a murder plot by dead Carlton Crew member Mario Condello to kill rivals Carl and George Williams.

He told an earlier hearing he had given Caine a gun and after he was murdered he asked Ms Garde-Wilson to give it back.

He said he only met with her to get the .25 Mauser back on the understanding that she would not be charged over it.

A court heard Ms Garde-Wilson was so distressed over the death of Caine, also known as Sean Vincent, that police suggested she start a new life interstate and seek professional help.

She told the ACC that she knew "Lewie" met his killers at a pub and was shot in a car belonging to one of the men`s girlfriends because "I speak to the spirits". "

The spirits are talking to me," she said.

During questioning she denied that Caine - who bashed a man to death after a nightclub altercation in 1988 - kept a gun at their city flat or that she handed one to 166 after Caine`s death. M

Ms Garde-Wilson is fighting the Legal Services Board`s decision not to renew her practising certificate.
