I think that a 10 cent increase on fuel prices is just get out of control. Before fuel prices sky rocketed to the extreme 138 cents per litre I was able to fill my tank on a mere $40 but the increase has increased it to $60. We pay these so called taxes to benefit us, but I have not yet seen the fruits of that labour. If the government spent the money on improving public transport by making it more accessible and comfortable green house emissions would decrease. I catch the train every day to work and its impossible to get a seat, which then I am left standing for the 45min ride in to the city. I would prefer to drive if it means I do not have to be sandwiched in between people. Rethink your strategy, improve public transport!!!

I thought that Rudd was going to bring down the cost of petrol? Well thats the message in the election campaign that the world price of a barrel of oil was all John Howards fault and little to do with the global supply and demand.

MOTORISTS will pay at least 10c extra per litre for petrol, with oil giants poised to pass on the cost of reducing greenhouse gas.

Australia`s biggest petrol refiner, Caltex, yesterday called for a direct 10c carbon tax on drivers. The company first suggested the carbon tax idea last year.

"Every time motorists filled up at a service station, there would be awareness of the carbon tax, encouraging motorists to think about driving less, taking public transport or buying a smaller car when possible," Caltex spokesman Frank Topham said.

The Rudd Government ruled out a carbon tax.

"The Australian Government does not support the use of a carbon tax," said a spokeswoman for Climate Change Minister Penny Wong.

But other oil giants admitted drivers would still be hit at the bowser when emissions trading started in 2010.

BP Australia said emissions trading was preferable to a direct carbon tax, but consumers would see a price rise either way.

Spokesman Chandran Vigneswaran said the fuel industry would not be alone in passing on the cost of the emissions trading scheme.

"I suspect all businesses in every industry, not just transport, will pass on the costs related to an emissions trading scheme to their customers," he said.

RACV spokesman David Cumming said that Caltex`s carbon tax proposal was "very cheeky".

"It is far too early for Caltex to be calling for this burden to be put on motorists when we are already struggling with record high petrol prices, in a country that is devoid of an alternative fuel policy," Mr Cumming said.

Motorists already paid 38c per litre in tax, and they were entitled to know where that tax was already going.

"What is all this tax for if it`s not in part already going towards tackling greenhouse gas emissions?" Mr Cumming said.

Victorian Council of Social Service CEO Cath Smith said record high petrol prices meant people already had an incentive to drive less.

"A lot of people are not actively choosing to use their car, they just don`t have access to convenient or reliable public transport options," Ms Smith said.

The rising price of fuel has already affected food prices, with growers, manufacturers and retailers passing on the increased price of production and freight to grocery buyers.

Family First senator Steve Fielding said the likelihood that carbon trading would force up fuel companies` cost, strengthened the case for petrol taxes to be cut.

"This reinforces Family First`s strong and long-held view that the petrol tax should be cut by 10 cents per litre," Senator Fielding said.

But Caltex, which posted a record $440 million profit last year, said that a 10c carbon tax would be easier for drivers to understand.

"A constant carbon tax can be communicated consistently, like petrol excise, whereas it is very difficult to communicate the cents-per-litre impact on the pump price of a constantly varying market-based carbon price," Mr Topham said, in his speech at the Australian Environment Business Network Industry and Greenhouse Conference this week.

Details of a carbon trading scheme will be finalised later this year after economist Ross Garnaut delivers his commissioned report on the impact of climate change on the economy in September.
