ONE of two fishermen missing after their fishing boat sank off the northern New South Wales coast has been found alive.

The man was spotted by a rescue helicopter crew this morning having survived up to 30 hours at sea after the trawler sank.

Queensland Rescue spokesman Andy Christie said he had spoken to the helicopter crew who found him.

"The crew said that he was talking, he was conscious - physically appeared to be okay ... but they were quick to point out that he had spent a very cold night in the water," he told Sky News.

A search resumed today for two men from the boat after a third swam for up to 12 hours to safety yesterday. He said he had left the other two men clinging to an Esky.

Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter spokesman Roger Fry said the ability of two men to survive gave hope to search crews that they would find the third alive.

"Judging that the second fisherman survived through the night ... we can only hope that the same has occurred with the third," he said on Sky News.

Up to 10 helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from NSW and south-east Queensland were still searching for the missing crew member this morning.

It is believed the men`s trawler, which operates from Brunswick Heads, north of Byron Bay, may have sunk after hitting a reef before dawn yesterday.

Local health officials said the rescued man was being airlifted to Ballina Hospital.

A spokeswoman for North Coast Area Health told NEWS.com.au: "He was found 5km north of Seven Mile Beach."

A spokeswoman for the Maritime Safety Authority said the man was found floating about 15km northeast of Ballina at 8.15am (AEDT).

"Obviously he`s been in the water for quite some time," she said.

The alarm was raised yesterday afternoon when a third crew member swam up to 12 hours to reach shore and was found exhausted and dehydrated on New Brighton Beach, near Byron Bay.
