Police end dig for missing newborn

8.08.2008

POLICE have ended their latest search for missing newborn Tegan Lane, who disappeared after leaving a Sydney hospital 12 years ago, and are following new leads.

A forensic archaeologist and cadaver dogs have been at a Gladesville address since Monday as police searched for more clues to Tegan`s whereabouts.

She disappeared on September 14, 1996 - two days after Keli Lane gave birth to her at Auburn Hospital in Sydney`s west.

Ms Lane visited the Venus St, Gladesville cottage - the home of her boyfriend at the time - immediately after being discharged from hospital.

"A number of items have been located during the operation which will be subjected to further forensic analysis to determine their relevance to the ongoing investigation," police said in a statement.

A 2006 coronial inquiry found there was not enough evidence to prosecute Ms Lane, but then NSW coroner John Abernethy referred the case to homicide police.

"Since the operation began on Monday, detectives have received a number of calls from members of public with new information," police said.

"This information has provided detectives with additional lines of inquiry, which are being investigated."

Detectives particularly want to hear from anyone who may have seen Ms Lane in the Auburn Hospital carpark on September 14, 1996.

Ms Lane managed to keep Tegan`s birth and those of two other children secret from her friends, family and lovers.

The other babies, born in 1995 and 1999, were legally adopted, and Tegan`s birth was discovered during paperwork for the latter adoption.

Ms Lane initially denied the baby`s existence but later said she gave Tegan to her natural father - a man she named as Andrew Norris.

Nationwide searches have failed to find any trace of that man.
