MANY women at a polygamous church ranch in Texas may have had children when they were as young as 13, Fox News reports.

The revelation from a child welfare officer came during a court hearing overnight to determine custody for the 416 children who lived at the ranch and who were allegedly physically and sexually abused.

Members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints deny the children were abused and say they are being persecuted for their faith.

The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a Mormon splinter group suspected of forcing underage girls into marriage with older men.

The New York Times reports the hearing descended into chaos as lawyers objected to the state presenting its case, including seeking psychiatric examinations for the children and genetic testing of both the children and the adults.
