PEOPLE have begun gathering on a sunny day at New Plymouth in New Zealand, where two Australian kayakers are expected to complete an epic crossing of the Tasman today.

Sydneysiders James Castrission, 25, and Justin Jones, 24, are due to arrive at the Ngamotu Beach, on New Zealand`s West Coast, at about 3.30pm (1330 AEDT) this afternoon.

They were just 18 km from land this morning.

During the past 62 days the pair have travelled more than 3,300 km and battled strong winds and tides that saw them go round in circles for part of the trip.

Early this morning a few hundred people had arrived to get a good vantage point to watch the Australians arrive.

Some of them carried kayaks and they`re expected to join others and paddle out to greet the pair when they arrive.

A fleet of Maori wakas (canoes) is expected to greet Castrission and Jones before they touch land today, as will local New Zealand kayakers.

It`s planned that tugboats will give the Australians a "spray welcome`` as they close in on the Port of New Plymouth.

Upon arriving, the pair will become the first people to kayak across the Tasman, and will have taken part in the longest ever two-man kayaking voyage.

The families of the two men will be on hand to greet them when they arrive.

Last night organisers of the event said an ambulance would be on hand to take the men to hospital soon after they hit land, amid fears they have physically deteriorated while at sea.

Jones has said is eager for some good food and cannot wait to tuck into a steak and a plate of ribs after he lands in New Zealand.
