A PIPE bomb and more than eight bullet casings have been recovered from a northern Sydney housing estate after an explosion.
Emergency crews were called to Walkers Drive in Lane Cove North about 3.50am (AEST) today after a resident reported what sounded like gunshots.
Police have confirmed a pipe bomb exploded underneath a car parked in the estate.
A second pipe bomb, undetonated, was found underneath the black Jeep Cherokee and was safely removed by technicians.
Detective Inspector Peter Yeomans said more than eight bullet casings were also found at the scene.
"At this stage there`s in excess of eight (casings)," he said.
The attack did not appear to be random or a scare tactic, he said.
"A device in relation to a home-made pipe bomb and a number of shots which we believe were fired from possibly an automatic weapon - I`d say that was to harm people."
Police are still investigating and as yet no arrests have been made.
