A 16-year-old boy was trying to flee the scene of the stabbing death of his father when officers arrived at the family`s Sydney home this morning, police said.

Police were called to a house in Bernadette Place at Baulkham Hills, in Sydney`s north-west, shortly after 7am (AEDT) today.

The triple-0 call was made by a 50-year-old-woman, believed to be the boy`s mother or stepmother, who alerted ambulance officers that a 57-year-old man had been stabbed, police said.

After making the call, the woman was also attacked, suffering stab wounds to her abdomen and back.

When police arrived on the scene, the man, confirmed as the boy`s father, was found dead.

The woman, who was employed by Westmead Children`s Hospital, had been dressed for work at the time of the attack about 7am (AEDT) today.

She was in a critical condition this afternoon after undergoing emergency surgery at Westmead Hospital.

`Nice family`

Superintendent  Sue  Waites said police had never been called to the family home before today.

"Apparently they`re a nice family, they had a gathering over the Easter period," she said.

"There`s never been any calls for domestic violence or any other issues at this location."

Police said that when they arrived, the boy was trying to leave the house on foot, carrying his school bag.

"He was verbally aggressive towards police," Supt Sue Waites said.

"There was an altercation with police in the front yard.

"Police had to stop him from leaving.

"He was handcuffed and detained."

Supt Waites said police had found the knife used in the attack.

Horrific

"It was very horrific for police who attended this morning," Supt Waites earlier told Macquarie Radio.

"We received a triple-0 call at 7.02 this morning from ... the mother in the house calling for ambulances.

"We`ve spoken to the neighbours, nobody heard any call for assistance.

"The only notification we had was a triple-0 call."

Police confirmed the boy was the man`s son and said they believed the woman to be his mother, but were unsure because it was the man`s second marriage.

The man had a second child, an elder daughter, possibly from his previous marriage, who was not at his house at the time.

They said they would spend the rest of the day interviewing the boy, canvassing neighbours in the area and "going through everything with a fine-tooth comb".
