WAYNE Carey`s estranged father has lashed out at his disgraced footy star son and denied inflicting abuse on his broken family.

Speaking in-depth for the first time, Kevin Carey offered his insight into "The King`s" self-destructive behaviour.

He lauded his boy`s footy prowess but attacked his character, declaring: "He was the best. He`s still the best, but he`s just an idiot."

The 67-year-old said he would watch a television interview to screen tonight on Enough Rope in which his premiership captain son is expected to tell about his violent upbringing.

But Kevin Carey warned he would take legal action against the ABC if he were accused of domestic violence.

Asked if he had anything to say to his son, he said: "You`re a ****head."

The Herald Sun found Carey Sr drinking pints of beer with six mates in a pub north of Adelaide.

Wearing ripped tracksuit pants and thongs, he told of his ruined relationship with his children and his hostility towards his former wife, Lynette.

He even confessed to his own violent offending.

Kevin Carey also:

  • said he had not spoken to Wayne for two years;

  • launched a vicious attack on Wayne`s girlfriend, Kate Neilson, saying "she`s . . . bad news";

  • said claims he was a violent alcoholic who`d abused his wife and children were untrue. "It`s rubbish, it will all be rubbish. There`s nothing there";

  • slammed other family members, using the word "dog" to describe them.

    A former boxer and rugby league player, Carey Sr spoke to the Herald Sun for about an hour, using language mostly unfit to print.

    He said his son`s undoing was his weakness for alcohol and women.

    Kevin Carey said he`d spent time in jail for an assault-related charge for "belting up some c***".

    Court records show that in 1992 he was convicted of threatening a 16-year-old boy with an unloaded rifle while serving a suspended sentence for stealing sheep.

    `She`s a liar`

    He spoke disparagingly of Ms Neilson, his daughter Sharon Bateman, and his former wife.

    Kevin Carey and his wife separated when Wayne was seven.

    "She was a f***ing liar. She will go out and say I`m a wife-basher," he said of his former wife.

    Asked if he`d ever beaten her, he said: "No."

    After their separation in the 1970s, Carey Sr moved from the family home in Wagga Wagga, NSW, to Adelaide with three of their five children: Wayne, Sammy and Karen.

    He said his son had a weakness for women and alcohol, and this was his undoing. "It`s the p*** and his d***," he said.

    Carey Sr attacked Wayne`s decision to speak publicly about the family`s troubled past, and vowed to sell his story.

    "He`s going for sympathy. I don`t give a f***. I`ll just come out with the truth."

    He said he had been drinking "all my life" but insisted he did not have a drinking problem.

    Carey Sr threatened to consult lawyers over the Enough Rope interview, in which he expects to be accused of inflicting violence upon his family.

    "Whatever he (interviewer Andrew Denton) comes out with, I`ll sue the pants off him," he said.

    "It is bull****. It will all be bull****."

    Denton said of Wayne Carey: "He`s so much in denial about things that he`s done in his life and where he came from, which is a violent alcoholic father."

    Kevin Carey told the Herald Sun he and Wayne had not spoken since 2005, when Wayne phoned to tell him he was returning to Arden St for an 80-year celebration event with the Kangaroos.

    The former captain left the team in 2002 after an affair with his vice-captain`s wife.

    The falling out happened because Carey Sr disapproved of his son`s decision to go back to the club.

    "If you run with dogs, you get fleas," Carey Sr told him, then hung up.

    Standing a stocky 173cm, he lacks his son`s height but has the same aggressive streak that marked Wayne as an AFL great.

    He`s known to tell strangers in the pub that he`s Wayne Carey`s dad, and remains proud of him.

    But he has said he didn`t attend games because he feared he might end up "behind bars" for attacking anyone he heard bad-mouthing Wayne`s on-field performances.
