TWO divers have been found alive after spending the night floating in the ocean off Queensland`s Whitsundays.

Police said the pair were spotted from a plane, floating in the water just before 9am (AEST) about 7.8 nautical miles north-west of Bait Reef.

The divers were winched into a helicopter and are being taken to Hamilton Island.

Police said the pair, a 38-year-old British man and a 40-year-old American woman, were both experienced divers.

They were amongst six people diving at Bait Reef yesterday on the chartered vessel Pacific Star.

Police said the pair were diving in a small inlet called Gary`s Lagoon when they failed to resurface as scheduled at 2.30pm (AEST).

The dive boat crew started a search, alerting police when they failed to find any trace of the missing divers.

Three aircraft, including a specialised search and rescue plane with forward looking infra-red equipment, searched overnight for the pair.

The search was expanded at first light with seven helicopters and three fixed wing aircraft looking for the pair.

Police are due to hold a press conference on the incident in Brisbane later today.
