North Korea fires three missiles

North Korea fires three missiles

NORTH Korea has fired three short-range missiles off its west coast, South Korea`s Yonhap news agency has reported.

Yonhap, quoting a government source, said the missiles were fired on Friday into the Yellow Sea off Jeungsan County, some 40km west of Pyongyang.

The testing was part of a military training exercise involving Russian-designed Styx ship-to-ship missiles with a range of 46km, the report said.

"The missile launch, like the test-firing conducted on March 28, is part of normal military training aimed at testing the performance of the missiles and improving operational readiness," the source was quoted in the report saying.

A South Korean defence ministry spokesman refused to comment.

The report came after South and North Korean nuclear envoys met in Beijing on Friday for about an hour over attempts to end the North`s nuclear program.

North Korea fired three or four missiles of the same type on March 28 in what was then described by the South Korean government as "part of a regular military exercise".

But the move raised the stakes in North Korea`s nuclear dispute with South Korea and the United States, which are attempting to secure a full declaration of North Korea`s atomic activities.

North Korea reached a landmark six-party deal last year with the United States, China, Japan, Russia and South Korea.

Under the deal, it agreed to disable nuclear plants at its key Yongbyon facility in exchange for aid and diplomatic recognition.

As part of that agreement, Pyongyang was to hand over a full declaration of all its nuclear activities by December 31 last year.

But disputes over the declaration have blocked the start of the final phase of the process - the permanent dismantling of the plants and the handover of all atomic material.

CONTROVERSIAL crime drama Underbelly has been banned from airing in Victoria until after the trial of a man accused of murdering a gangland figure.

Comment was not immediately available from the Nine Network.

Justice King also ordered the removal of all excerpts from Underbelly from the internet.

She made her decision during a preliminary hearing in the Victorian regional city of Geelong.

Justice King yesterday gave defence lawyers and public prosecutors until today to view more than 10 hours of the Melbourne gangland drama to determine whether the series would affect the upcoming murder trial.

Nine handed over DVDs of the 13 episodes yesterday after being subpoenaed by the Office of Public Prosecutions last week, when doubts were raised over whether an accused Victorian gangland murderer, who cannot be named, would get a fair hearing.

Justice King, who also viewed the series yesterday, today said the conversations in the drama would largely be "a figment of someone`s imagination".

"It will be difficult for the viewing public to sift through what is factual material and what is fictional," she said.

"The series explains to a large degree why the person was murdered.

"That is really what is the subject for the trial."

The state`s Office of Public Prosecutions applied for the broadcast to be delayed on the grounds of prejudice.

Supreme Court justice Betty King today granted the order.

The screening of the $13 million series is now indefinitely delayed in Victoria.
