TORRENTIAL downpours in China have now claimed 64 lives, state media reported, with flash-floods destroying thousands of homes as well as bridges and large swathes of crops.

The southwestern province of Guizhou was hardest hit, with 43 people killed in floods, Xinhua news agency reported late yesterday, after a new downpour on Thursday flooded 19 cities and counties.

More than 130,000 people were affected by the continuing bad weather, which also knocked out two bridges and a highway, according to earlier Xinhua reports.

Torrential rain has also hit four other provinces in the past four days, killing 21 people.

In the southern province of Guangxi, where two people died, more than 700 houses collapsed and 13,800 hectares of crops were affected.

In the central province of Hunan, seven people were killed and three more were feared buried under mud and rocks, Xinhua reported on Thursday.

More than 16,000 houses collapsed in eastern Jianxi province due to the heavy rain, Xinhua said.
