Woman punches bus driver in face

Woman punches bus driver in face

30.05.2008

A FEMALE passenger aboard a Gold Coast bus punched the driver in the face after a dispute over an expired ticket, police say.

The woman was attempting to board a bus at the Runaway Bay Shopping Centre about 2.20pm (AEST) on Wednesday, but was told to leave when she produced an expired ticket.

Police allege after a verbal argument, the passenger punched the 53-year-old driver, causing bruising to her left eye, and fled the scene.

The driver continued her run and did not report the incident until yesterday.

Acting senior sergeant Steve Keeling today made an appeal for witnesses to the incident to come forward, saying there were a number of fellow passengers aboard the bus and waiting at the stop.

The incident follows robbery attacks on bus drivers in Surfers Paradise in early February.

"It is a disturbing trend when anyone who is providing a service to the public is assaulted in this manner," Snr Sgt Keeling said.

The woman is described as being of Aboriginal or Pacific Islander appearance, about 170cm tall, of solid build and wearing a black top and knee-length brown skirt.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

  • AOC executive votes against Nick D`Arcy
  • Rejected submission that he was "fit and proper"
  • Swimmer to appeal to world sport court

THE Australian Olympic Committee has voted unanimously to sack swimmer Nick D`Arcy from its Beijing Games team.

The AOC executive has rejected a submission from D`Arcy and his legal team that he is a fit and proper person to represent his country at the Olympics.

The ruling restores an initial decision made in April by AOC president John Coates, which was subsequently overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

D`Arcy, 20, immediately said he would launch another appeal to the CAS.  "It is already in the works," he has said.

He has said he will continue his training regimen until every avenue of appeal has been exhausted.

D`Arcy is due in court next week to answer a charge of recklessly causing grievous bodily harm to retired swimmer Simon Cowley, an offence which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years` jail.

Earlier today D`Arcy, who broke the Commonwealth 200m butterfly record during the selection trials, pleaded his case to the executive at a closed meeting.

His lawyer Jack Leitner said the session had gone well. "We were warmly received, which was positive, and we put our case to the AOC," Mr Leitner said.

Late last month the CAS ruled that Mr Coates did not have the right to terminate the swimmer`s selection and the AOC executive must vote on such matters.

Mr Coates absented himself from today`s meeting, which was chaired by AOC vice-president Ron Harvey.

The 14 board members who heard D`Arcy`s statement included veteran IOC members Kevan Gosper and Phil Coles and Olympians Peter Montgomery, Michael Wenden, Lynne Bates, Nick Green, Vikki Roberts and Tom King.

A magistrate`s ruling last week lifted bail restrictions that prevented D`Arcy from associating with certain members of the swimming team.
