A SPATE of global positioning satellite (GPS) thefts from cars has prompted South Australian police to warn people not to leave the devices in their cars.

Seventy GPS devices were stolen from cars by opportunistic thieves in Adelaide`s city centre and suburbs between February 1 and May 15, police say.

GPS units are also being targeted by thieves around the rest of Australia.

It has prompted police to issue a flyer, urging people to remove their GPS plus its tell-tale support cradle and suction caps, from their cars when they park.
