THE top United Nations aid official met Burma`s Prime Minister Thein Sein today in the highest level meeting so far during his visit to the cyclone-ravaged country, a UN spokesman said.
The meeting took place a day after John Holmes visited the Irrawaddy Delta region, which bore the brunt of Cyclone Nargis on May 2-3.
"John Holmes met with the Prime Minister," said Aye Win, the UN`s spokesman in Rangoon, adding that further details of their meeting would be available at a press conference later today.
Sir Holmes arrived in Burma late on Sunday as part of a UN bid to convince the ruling generals to take the brakes off a full-scale relief operation.
The UN says only 500,000 of the 2.4 million people it estimates are in urgent need have been reached by a relief effort hampered by the ruling junta`s reluctance to grant visas to foreign disaster relief experts.
Sir Holmes will be followed into Burma by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who is due to arrive on Thursday.
