Homemade bomb found in car boot

20.05.2008

A WEST Australian man wanted to injure a lot of people with a homemade bomb found in his car boot, police say.

The man was pulled over for a drink driving test while motoring through Kununurra, in the state`s far northern Kimberley region, about 12.30am (WST) on Saturday.

After he returned a positive alcohol blood reading, police took him home and spoke to his 29-year-old partner who told them about an explosive device the man had been making during the day.

Police then searched his car, left near a shopping centre, and found a home made bomb.

Officers cordoned off the area before the device was forensically tested, then dismantled and taken to Kununurra Police Station.

Police allege the device "was designed to injure a large number of people at one time".

They also say officers found blood on the man`s hands.

A 31-year-old man has been charged with making or possessing an explosive device with intent to cause injury.

He also has been charged with threatening to kill, after allegedly assaulting his partner, preventing her from leaving their house for a period of time and threatening to harm her with knives.

The 31-year-old man is due to appear in the Kununurra Magistrates Court tomorrow.
