  • Mother of two shot dead on neighbour`s doorstep
  • Police believe shooter was 60-year-old man
  • Public told to watch for but not approach suspects

A WOMAN ran for her life, pursued from her home by a gunman, before she was shot in the head as she screamed for help on a neighbour`s doorstep this morning.

Police revealed the details of the murder in suburban Melbourne as parts of Frankston Hospital and Frankston High School were closed in the hunt for the gunman.

Heavily armed police, the air wing and the dog squad are searching for a man in his 60s suspected of shooting the woman in the head at a Frankston house shortly after 9am.

Police said the woman, 33, was chased out of her house by the gunman and pursued to a neighbour`s house, where she screamed for help.

"She ran to another house several doors down in Burns Street and knocked on the door calling for help," Detective Senior Sergeant Rowland Legg said.

"As the door was opened, we understand that she was shot by the male pursuing her. He then ran from the premises."

The gunman fled in a car.

"We are establishing whether the male and female were together at the house prior to this occurring," Det-Sen-Sgt Legg said

"Our understanding at this stage is there is no family relationship but the indications are they are known to each other.

"We don`t believe the man is living at the house."

The victim was the mother of two children aged 8 and 14. They are being cared for by relatives.

Police have not established a motive for the shooting.

`It`s clearly particularly brutal and obviously a shock to everybody," Det-Sen-Sgt Legg said.

"I don`t know what has led to it or the exact circumstances.

"We are going on witnesses saying the lady was pursued, and on arriving at this house she was shouting for help and was shot at the entrance. He warned people not to go near the man if they saw him.

"Obviously it`s a dangerous situation. He could be in a desperate situation. I believe he could still be armed and people should keep their distance."

Anyone who sees the man is advised not to approach him.
