Mumbai in box seat to progress

19.05.2008
CHENNAI Super Kings moved one step closer to a semi-final spot after they claimed a three-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders on the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Chasing the Knight Riders` total of 5-149, Chennai reached 0-55 after eight overs when play was halted due to rain.

And the umpires decided to end to the match after a one-hour wait, giving Chennai a narrow win.

Earlier, Chennai paceman Makhaya Ntini claimed the third hat-trick of the tournament and took figures of 4-21.

Salman Butt was the Knight Riders` highest scorer with 73 from 54 balls.

In Sunday`s other match, Mumbai Indians claimed their sixth successive win with a 25-run victory over the disappointing Deccan Chargers.

Despite no batsman really taking advantage of their solid starts, Sanath Jayasuriya, Abhishek Nayar and Dwayne Bravo all reached 30 as the Indians posted a competitive total of 7-178.

In reply, Adam Gilchrist, Shahid Afridi and Rohit Sharma all fell cheaply and despite some power hitting from Venugopal Rao and Dwaraka Ravi Teja, the Chargers could not recover.

Mumbai are now in great shape to reach the semi-finals, while the Chargers now have no chance of progressing.
