HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson has apologised to Port Adelaide counterpart Mark Williams over what he labelled an unacceptable gesture from one of his players late in the Hawks AFL win at Launceston`s Aurora Stadium.Hawks forward Mark Williams made a choking gesture towards the coaching box containing his Power namesake after kicking the final goal of his team`s comeback victory.
It resembled the gesture famously made by the Port coach after his side`s 2004 grand final win, a victory that allowed the club to erase the chokers tag it had worn after previous failed finals.
The Hawks forward has come under fire in the past for some of his celebratory gestures, including a rifle-shooting motion early in his career.
But Clarkson was far from amused at the forward`s actions, warning him it was "the quickest way to find the exit door at the footy club" and issuing a public apology on behalf of Hawthorn.
"It was not in line with the way that we like to go about our footy, he knows that, our players know that," Clarkson said.
"We like to be humble and gracious in victory and certainly not put on performances like that.
"Can I make an apology to Mark Williams of Port Adelaide and the Port Adelaide footy club because we don`t accept that sort of behaviour at our club."
Clarkson said he expected his player to personally make a call to the Port coach to apologise, although he was unsure whether it would be accepted.
"If I was Choco Williams from Port Adelaide I don`t even know if I`d want a call, we look at it pretty dimly, that sort of behaviour," Clarkson said.
A Hawks spokesman later said their player had called the Power coach and was believed to have left a message on his phone.
Judging by Williams` post-match reaction, though, it seems unlikely he will return the call.
"I don`t need a call," he said.
"I couldn`t care less, it doesn`t help us win the game, lose the game."
He did, however, fire a return shot.
"He hadn`t touched the ball all day so I`m not sure exactly what he was getting at," he said.
Williams had just 10 touches, with the final goal his only scoring shot.
