FOUR children, aged one to five, their mother and a Palestinian gunman were killed during Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip today.

Mussab Abu Maateq, one, Hana Abu Maateq, three, Rudeina Abu Maateq, four, and Saleh Abu Maateq, five, were killed along with their mother when a tank shell hit their home in Beit Hanun, doctors at the Kamal Radwan hospital said.

An armed man was killed in an exchange of fire with Israeli troops in the same area, the medics added.

The Israeli military confirmed its forces had carried out operations in Gaza, including two air strikes, and said a soldier was lightly wounded.

At least 443 people, most of them Palestinians, have been killed since Israel and the Palestinians relaunched formal peace talks under US auspices at an international conference in November, according to an AFP tally.
