KOKODA trekkers swelled numbers at this year`s Anzac Day dawn service at the Bomana War Cemetery in Papua New Guinea.
Close to 500 people witnessed the service to commemorate the Anzac spirit, which has considerable significance in PNG due to it being the venue of a major military campaign during World War II.
Australia`s Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, along with others who have been in the country for the PNG-Australia government ministers forum this week, laid a wreath and extolled the virtues of those young Australian men who paid the supreme sacrifice.
An eerie mist blanketed the 3000 graves of young Australians who fell in PNG during WWII.
The increasing popularity of walking the Kokoda Track, where 600 Australians died fighting invading Japanese, has brought with it increasing crowds at the Bomana Cemetery.
