  • Gunmen hide out in bank for two hours
  • Hold staff at gunpoint, raid safe
  • Carjack woman, boy to get away

A WOMAN driving to the shops with a 20-month-old boy have been dragged into a daring bank hold-up when they were carjacked by bandits fleeing the scene.

Three men broke into the ANZ bank on the Kingsway in Miranda in southern Sydney, laid in wait for two hours then held up staff at gunpoint as they arrived to open the branch at about 8.30am (AEST).

The staff were ordered at gunpoint to open a safe.   Police and the bank are yet to reveal how much money was stolen in the raid.

One of the men ran from the bank on foot but the other two forced the woman and boy out of a white Toyota Camry at gunpoint as they looked for a park at a nearby shopping centre.

After brandishing the weapon in her face, the men drove off, police said.  They said the woman was "pretty shaken up" and in shock after her ordeal.

Crying and distresed the woman ran into the mall, holding the child she was babysitting.  "We heard her screaming first," shopkeeper Rebecca told Sydney`s Daily Telegraph.

"We came out to see if everytihng was all right. She was crouched on the floor hugging the baby."

A spokesman for ANZ said the staff threatened by the men would be offered counselling after "an obviously traumatic experience".

Police were initially reported to have been uncertain if the robbers took all the cash with them when they left.

Officers are investigating whether a stolen car still parked outside the bank is connected to the incident.

Witnesses have been asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
