A SEVERE tropical storm has hit southern China, bringing gale-force winds and forcing the rescue of 38 fishermen who sheltered in reefs as the typhoon approached.

Typhoon Neoguri swept through Macau in the afternoon, after it struck Hainan island south of mainland China the night before, forcing flight cancellations and the evacuation of 210,000 people, according to Xinhua news agency.

The former Portuguese colony closed its three cross-sea bridges linking the Macau peninsula to a neighbouring island.

No casualties have been reported, and by the time the typhoon hit Hainan, packing winds of 108km/h, it had weakened to a severe tropical storm, Xinhua said.

A separate report from the news agency said the storm had affected 1.3 million people in Hainan, or one in six of the island`s population.

In addition, 550 houses had been damaged, and the direct financial losses came to 337 million yuan ($51.25 million).

Authorities in Hainan said a rescue ship had found 38 fishermen who swam to a reef area after their three boats were damaged. The fishermen were part of a group of 56 with whom the local fishing office had lost contact late Thursday.

Another 18 fishermen remain missing, and authorities have dispatched a helicopter in the rescue effort. A passing freighter has joined the search, Xinhua said.
