TWO passenger trains collided in eastern China today, killing 43 people and injuring 247, according to early reports.

One train, en route from Beijing to the eastern city of Qingdao, hit another in the city of Zibo in Shandong province early today, a spokesman with the Shandong provincial government was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

The second train was travelling between Yantai in Shandong, and Xuzhou in the neighbouring province of Jiangsu.

The collision caused 10 carriages to topple into a ditch.

In January, a high-speed train ran through a group of maintenance workers in the dark in Shandong, killing 18 in China`s worst railway accident in years.
