FIRST pictures have been released of the wreck of HMAS Sydney which sank in 1941 with the loss of all 645 crew.

The eerie shots come just weeks after a search team pinpointed the wreck and that of the German raider Kormoran, which sank it.

The two ships destroyed each other in a ferocious battle of the West Australian coast on November 19, 1941. Of the Kormoran crew, 317 people survived.

The pictures released today by the Finding Sydney Foundation were taken at a depth of nearly 2.5km.

The pictures show the massive damage the warship suffered before it sank.

While some show areas of the teak decking remarkably intact, others reveal twisted metal where a searchlight platform was torn away from the forward funnel and evidence of a direct hit between the barrels of one of the gun turrets.

The Finding Sydney Foundation said the wreck was sitting upright on the ocean bed with all its visible guns pointing to port.

The search team said that although it used a remote camera to look for the ship`s bell on the quarterdeck, it was nowhere to be found.

Search director David Mearns said that after looking at the images, he believed Sydney hit the seabed stern first and slid about 50m to its final resting place.

Mr Mearns said both funnels and masts were gone and all lifeboats were missing from their cradles.
