Napping Goldilocks burglar jailed

A GOLDILOCKS burglar who snoozed in a bed and sampled food during a spate of break-ins has been jailed for at least three years.

Michael William Andrew Vasiliou, 29, stole almost $500,000 worth of luxury goods during 26 robberies, including jewellery, designer sunglasses, plane tickets, cash and a car between January 2005 and June last year.

At one house in Caulfield North, Victoria, he had a nap in a spare bed while the residents slept upstairs, and at another home in St Kilda he helped himself to a casserole.

County Court judge Michael Bourke - who described the case as having "elements of the Three Bears" fairytale - said Vasiliou had ruined his life so far with drugs.

After his arrest last year he co-operated with police.

Judge Bourke said Vasiliou had been a heroin user since his teens.

He said Vasiliou`s offending was separated only by terms of imprisonment and it could not be said that rehabilitation was likely - but that all hope "should not be abandoned".

Vasiliou, who pleaded guilty to 24 counts of theft, 15 of burglary, eight of aggravated burglary and two other charges, was sentenced to 4 1/2 years` jail with a non-parole period of three years.
