Boxing turns into all-in brawl

1.04.2008

AN all-in brawl erupted at a New Zealand boxing tournament when a spectator leapt into the ring to help a fighter who was getting a beating.

The tournament in Auckland last week pitted athletes from traditional rivals Samoa and Tonga against each other.

It descended into chaos after a spectator jumped into the ring at the start of the fifth round, the New Zealand Herald reported.

The man was apparently unhappy that Samoan boxer Bob Gasio was leading on points over Tonga`s Sinela Fifita.

"He started running around in the ring ... He started pushing me and one of the corner boys," boxing trainer Ofisa Vili told the newspaper.

When the man was ejected by bouncers, about 20 spectators, mainly Samoans and Tongans, began brawling.

The match was stopped following the brawl, which lasted about five minutes.
