Just hours after her release, TMZ.com snapped Britney and an unidentified male driving through the streets of Los Angeles, with Britney turning the camera on the paparazzi, taking pictures of them with her camera phone while at the wheel.
The celebrity website said doctors had determined Britney no longer posed a legal danger to herself or to others, and she could no longer be held against her will.
Only this week doctors won an extra two weeks to detain the star after her life went into a dramatic freefall in recent months - most notably with the loss of custody of her two young sons.
However TMZ.com said it had been anticipated that the UCLA Medical Centre would probably release her early "because she became co-operative and relatively stable".
