- Aussie-born Michael Johns auditions
- Impressed with "white soul" voice
- Hopes to make the Top 24
MICHAEL Johns has been wooing the American Idol judges with his soulful voice, but will it be enough to carry the Australian-born singer into the Top 24?
The 29-year-old auditioned in San Diego earlier in the year, along with 12,000 people from the area and only 30 people were selected.
A Perth boy, Johns left Australia at the age of 18 and was the lead singer of the band The Rising, which was all set to release a debut on Maverick Records in 2003 (back when Madonna still ran the label). He has since married a Texan girl and they now live in LA.
Johns has impressed the judges in the seventh season of the American Idol series, with Simon Cowell praising him during his initial audition as a “white soul singer” when he sang Otis Redding’s, I’ve been Loving You Too Long.
He breezed through Hollywood Week Day One will a rendition of Light My Fire by The Doors and wowed judges on Day Four (getting a place in the Top 50) with Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.
Judge Randy Jackson said: “I’ve been a fan since day one", while Cowell said, "It’s the best audition of the day.”
NEWS.com.au is getting behind the Aussie singer`s push to make the Top 24. Unfortunately, Australian audiences can`t vote in the competition, so if you think Johns can go all the way, check out the American Idol site and click on `JOIN myIDOL` to voice your support.
Also, check out his Myspace page and some fansites (here and here and here) which have been set up to back the Australian in his quest.
American Idol can be seen exclusively in Australia on Foxtel. Tune in at 7.30pm on FOX8, to see if he can make the final cut through to the top 24.
