RESCUED divers Richard Neely and Allyson Dalton broke all the dive site rules, got lost and probably surfaced 2km from their boat - not the 200m they stated, it was claimed today.

OzSail, who operated the ill-fated dive trip, today hit back at claims by the couple in a television interview that they were abandoned by the dive boat crew and left to die, the Courier-Mail reports.

Highly-experienced dive instructor Neely, 38, and his partner Dalton, 40, survived 19 hours adrift in shark-infested waters of the Great Barrier Reef near Hayman Island.

In a statement, the dive company cast doubt about claims by the couple that they surfaced within 200m of the boat and deployed their bright orange surface marker buoy to be picked up.

"Allyson and Richard did not remain on the dive site," the statement claims.
