Good luck of Adelaide, Albanians have all rights there.Where else kids are entitled on education on their native languages (including universities)? Certainly in Serbia. Why is Serbia paying debt incured by Kosovo's 'entreprises'? If Albanian's leaders are so good & great why they never made and economicaly viable company? The other facts you got wrong is that in Yugoslavia Serbs ruled -the main decision were made by Tito (Croat) and Kardelj (Slovenian). So how that Serbs get all the blame? After Tito, a member of Precidency was Albanian from Kosovo & Metohia who even didn't have Yugoslavian citizenship! Yeah, they were peresecuted!

I'm happy for the Albanians of Kosovo, they finally got there independence from Serbia, just like Montenegro, Bosnia, etc... Maybe the Serbs should think about why these countries don't want to be apart of theirs. What's next? Vojvodina? Hahaha.. The 8% of Serbs in Kosovo should just pack their bags and go back to Beograd and let the Albanians enjoy their right of independence that the many generations have fought for.

KOSOVO`S leaders called on the international community to recognise their territory`s newly-declared independence today, as riot police used tear gas and batons to disperse hundreds of Serbian youths who ran riot in Belgrade.

Tens of thousands of people in the Kosovo capital Pristina erupted in cheers as their parliament formally voted to break from Serbia, then celebrated into the night.

But there was a violent reaction in Serbia to the final fallout from the conflict-strewn break-up of the former Yugoslavia.

About 800 youths took to the streets of Belgrade, targetting the embassies of Western backers of Kosovo`s independence and Western companies like McDonald`s.

The rioting lasted several hours and at least 50 people - among them 20 policemen - were injured during the rioting, according to local media reports.

Serbian stand

The Serbian Government, backed by Russia, has vowed to never recognise the independence move by the landlocked state of about two million people.

President Boris Tadic said Serbia "will take responsible moves and will do everything in its power to annul this arbitrary and illegally proclaimed independence of Kosovo``.

"Serbia will not resort to violence and that is the only approach which can enable us to continue our legitimate fight to preserve the integrity of our country.``

But Russia failed to secure the backing of the UN Security Council for its call to declare the independence declaration "null and void``.

A joint statement issued on behalf of the European members of the Council (Belgium, France, Italy, Britain, Croatia) plus Germany, the United States and the European Union presidency, said: "We regret that the Security Council cannot agree on the way forward.``

EU foreign ministers will now meet in Brussels "to agree to react to today`s developments``.

Sorry history

In Australia, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the Australian Government believed an independent Kosovo would be a good thing and would offer official diplomatic recognition in the near future.

"We`ve already indicated to our diplomatic representatives around the world that this (independence) would be an appropriate course of action," he said on ABC radio.

"The sorry history of Kosovo means we`ve got to do whatever we can to ensure that the citizens of that part of the world are protected into the future.

"This would appear to be the right course of action. That`s why, diplomatically, we would extend recognition at the earliest opportunity."

The United States called on all parties in the region to exercise restraint.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said: "We welcome the clear commitment of the Kosovo Government to protect ethnic minority communities.

"We are now reviewing this issue and discussing it with our European allies.``

Kosovo`s politicians voted for a declaration that recalled the province`s "years of strife and violence`` under Serbian sovereignty but vowed to "protect and promote the rights of all communities`` in the new country.

"We are now an independent, free, sovereign and democratic country,`` said parliament speaker Jakup Krasniqi.
