TESTS will be carried out today to determine the cause of death of two young siblings, who were found in their southwest Sydney home last night.

The children`s father arrived at the modest McKibbin St, Canley Heights home about 6.30pm and made the gruesome discovery.

Police said the man found the five-year-old boy and his three-year-old sister dead inside the house.

The children`s 29-year-old mother was found suffering from self-inflicted stab wounds to her wrists.

"It`s anticipated she will be interviewed by detectives when her condition permits," police said.

Screams

Neighbours, alerted by the sounds of screams, called police and ambulance crews.

According to initial ambulance reports, the children`s bodies had not sustained any obvious injuries.

As paramedics worked to stabilise the woman`s condition, the man was escorted by officers into the back of an ambulance, where he could be heard wailing.

The woman was rushed to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition, where she remained last night under police guard.

Medics` despair

The NRMA CareFlight helicopter was called but a spokesman said "there was nothing the doctor and paramedic on board could do".

"When the call came in we hoped it may have been a hoax, but unfortunately . . . they (the children) were already deceased when we arrived," he said.

NRMA CareFlight spokesman Ian Badham said they received a call after neighbours reported they saw the mother over the back fence attacking the children.

Acting Superintendent Greg Peters last night would not confirm how the children died.

"The male came home from work and found the people in the house, two children deceased and the female with injuries and called the ambulance," Supt Peters said.

"We`ve got to get the medical care for both the female and the male and then we will get statements or they`ll be interviewed in relation to the incident to see what actually took place.".

`Quiet family`

Shocked neighbours said last night the family had only moved into the house about six months ago.

"They seemed like a nice, quiet family," a neighbour, who did not wish to be identified, said.

Crime scene police tape was placed around the house last night as forensics officers scoured the area.

Homicide detectives assisted by local police interviewed neighbours.
