Attacker a coward, granny says

14.08.2007

A FEISTY 91-year-old bashed in her home has branded her attacker a coward and says she was too busy trying to fight him off to be scared.

Bruised and battered Melbourne great grandmother Rachael Williams has refused to let the savage assault and six burglaries at her home in five months destroy her spirit.

The stoic widow spoke today from her hospital bed where she is recovering from cuts, recalling how she tried to fend off the invader hovering over her bed.

"I`m ready to take him on again if I ever meet him again," Mrs Williams said.

Mrs Williams said the intruder who broke into a back window and belted her in the face several times picked an easy target.

"I was too busy trying to stop myself from being punched up to be frightened," she said.

"He wouldn`t take on a man I suppose.

"It doesn`t say much for him does it?

Mrs Williams will have plastic surgery in the Northern Hospital later this week.

Robbers have raided her home, in the outer northern Melbourne suburb of Broadmeadows, six times in recent months, stealing money, food and cigarettes.

The fiercely independent pensioner was asleep yesterday when a thief broke in through a boarded-up back window about 7am (AEST).

She awoke to find the intruder standing over her in her bedroom.

The man fled with bedside tables holding her nightclothes.

Mrs Williams has lived in the home for 60 years and wants to stay there despite her ordeal.
