Obama`s choice

Here are some of the top contenders to be chosen as Barack Obama`s vice-presidential nominee:

Hillary Clinton: would bring her 18 million supporters and key states behind Obama, but a bitter campaign and potential for rivalry might put him off.

Kathleen Sebelius: the governor of Kansas could bring women and Republican states behind Obama but is untested. Was chosen to deliver the Democrats` official reply to the State of the Union, suggesting the party has big plans for her.

Bill Richardson: the governor of New Mexico could rally Hispanic voters, was in Bill Clinton`s cabinet and was an early backer of Obama, but might restrict a campaign of "change".

Joe Biden: an early candidate with strong foreign policy experience, but could also be painted as a Washington insider.

Chuck Hagel: a Republican, a Vietnam veteran and a strident critic of the Iraq war.Would show bipartisan appeal, but would he do it?

Jim Webb: another Vietnam veteran and a former boss of the US Navy.Another senator, but could swing Republican Virginia over to Obama.

Tim Kaine: an early, loud supporter of Obama and is governor of Virginia so has the same upside, with the added benefit of executive experience.

I'm glad it's over, I for one, was well and trully sick of listening to the same old rhetoric from both candidates. I don't think it is possible to ever see what a US political candidate really thinks. All I see is spin and manipulation of the media.Anyway it's good to see some new blood, the Clinton franchise has had it's day.

  • Clinton will concede Obama`s win this weekend
  • Obama appoints team to choose running mate
  • Obama wins nomination: Full coverage of historic day

HILLARY Clinton said she will bow out of her marathon campaign for the White House on Sunday (Australian time) and throw her full support behind Democratic rival Barack Obama.

In a letter to supporters, she said she would use an event in Washington, DC, to thank her backers and urge the party to unite behind Senator Obama, who secured enough delegates to clinch the Democratic nomination on Tuesday.

"I have said throughout the campaign that I would strongly support Senator Obama if he were the Democratic Party`s nominee, and I intend to deliver on that promise," said Senator Clinton in the letter, published in various media reports.

The New York senator had so far refused to concede defeat, saying she would deliberate in the coming days.

"I will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise," the letter said

Senator Obama has already turned his focus to the five-month general-election fight for the White House against Republican John McCain and announced a three-member team to head his search for a vice presidential candidate.

Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late President John Kennedy, will head a team of three vetting  prospective running mates.   Near the top of the agenda in their search will be questions about a possible teaming with Senator Clinton, who has indicated interest in the job.

"We`re going to be having a conversation in coming weeks, and I`m very confident how unified the Democratic Party`s going to be to win in November," Senator Obama said when asked about Senator Clinton.

Peace talk

The pair made a joint appearance in Washington, at which Senator Obama tried to heal relations with Senator Clinton after their long and sometimes bitter nominating fight.  They had been planning a face-to-face meeting to map out a way to bring together their rival teams of millions of supporters.

In his speech, Senator Obama called Senator Clinton an "extraordinary candidate and extraordinary public servant."

Senator Clinton later complimented Senator Obama. "It has been an honour to contest these primaries with him. It is an honour to call him my friend," she said.

Senator Clinton`s supporters then turned up the pressure for the New York senator to be named as Senator Obama`s No 2.

However former US president Jimmy Carter said making Senator Clinton his running mate would be disastrous.  It "would be the worst mistake that could be made``, Carter told The Guardian. "That would just accumulate the negative aspects of both candidates."

In his victory speech yesterday, Senator Obama hinted at a role for Senator Clinton somewhere in his administration if he is elected.  If he overlooked her for vice-president, it has been speculated he could put her in charge of health, her pet issue.

He tried to phone Senator Clinton yesterday after his win but had to leave two voicemail messages before she called back.

Battling McCain

Senator McCain has proposed that Senator Obama join him for a series of joint town-hall meetings around the country between now and November.

Senator Obama`s campaign manager called the idea "appealing" but proposed format changes and made no immediate commitment.

Blogs Match-up: Can Obama beat McCain?

Senator Obama took aim at Senator McCain for his staunch support of the Iraq war during a speech to a pro-Israel lobbying group in Washington, saying the Arizona senator "refuses to understand or acknowledge the failure of the policy that he would continue".

"He criticises my willingness to use strong diplomacy, but offers only an alternate reality - one where the war in Iraq has somehow put Iran on its heels," he said.  "Senator McCain offers a false choice: stay the course in Iraq, or cede the region to Iran."
