AS Australian troop reinforcements arrived in troubled East Timor last night, the head
of the country`s army launched a scathing attack on international forces following a failed assassination attempt on President Jose Ramos-Horta.

Brigadier General Taur Matan Ruak said yesterday he was staggered international forces in East Timor failed to detect and prevent a rebel plot to assassinate Mr Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.

Brigadier General Ruak said forces sent to beleaguered nation to help provide security and stability were clearly deficient.

Rebels shot Mr Ramos-Horta at dawn on Monday, but he survived and has undergone surgery in Darwin. Mr Gusmao, who escaped injury, was also targeted in a co-ordinated attack. Rebel leader Alfredo Reinado was killed during the attack.

An extra 120 Australian troops and 50 additional police officers arrived in Dili yesterday where they will join the 800 Australian peacekeepers already on the ground.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will take personal charge of Australia`s beefed-up intervention in East Timor, with plans to visit the strife-torn nation later this week.

Prime Minister Gusmao`s Australian-born wife Kirsty Sword Gusmao yesterday spoke of her fears when she realised her family home was surrounded by armed men. She said she had told her three scared children to hide under their beds.

"What ensued was a pretty dramatic and horrifying hour and a half, not knowing how many men had surrounded us, not knowing really what we should do," she told 2GB.

"My first concern of course was for the security of the children so I ordered them under the bed. They were clearly terrified in not knowing what was going on. That uncertainty adds to the terror considerably.`

Ms Sword Gusmao said her husband, whose car was ambushed, was safe, and had been staying at his office.
