Great, you people don't get it. Voting Hillary into the white house is voting for Bill Clinton's third term, more spins more scandals. And comment below, did Rudd really support Hillary, wow I'm surprised, since Obama is a rookie just like Rudd before he was PM. Ironic isn't it, typical spins by Rudd the Dud.

HILLARY Clinton has taken a huge step towards resuscitating her US presidential race with a crucial win in the Ohio primary and at least a moral victory in Texas on what has been dubbed "Super Tuesday II".

Arcane rules surround the Texas vote but US media projections have awarded her a win in the popular vote. The distribution of delegates may take some time to become fully clear - it is possible for her to win the popular vote but emerge with fewer delegates.

Senator Clinton had gone into today`s contests needing to claw back momentum with wins in at least one and possibly both states.

A subdued, serious Barack Obama congratulated Senator Clinton for taking Ohio, but said he still had the upper hand in the race.  At Clinton campaign headquarters, the mood was ecstatic - and no doubt largely relieved.

"The people of Ohio have said it loudly and clearly, we`re going on. We`re going strong. And we`re going all the way," she said to cheering supporters.

Senator Clinton took several swipes at Senator Obama in her victory speech.  "When there`s a crisis and that phone rings at 3am, in the White House, there`s no time for speeches or on the job training. You have to be ready to make a decision," she said.

"America needs a president who is ready to lead, ready to stand up for what`s right even when it`s hard," she said.  Often, her supporters chanted "Yes, we will!" - a reference to the Obama catch-cry of "Yes we can".

The Ohio and Texas results keep the Democratic race alive at least until Pennsylvania votes in late April.  And it raises the chances that the nomination will be decided by the "superdelegates" of the party.

Republicans

Vermont and Rhode Island also voted today.  Senator Obama easily took out the Democratic vote in Vermont, while Senator Clinton won Rhode Island.  But the larger states were the real prizes on offer.

Senator Clinton`s wins in Ohio and Rhode Island are her first since Super Tuesday, when she also took out the largest states on offer.

John McCain has won the Republican nomination after wins in Texas and Ohio and immediately took a swipe at his opponents in his victory speech.  (Video.)

He also won the races in Vermont and Rhode Island, giving him the required number of delegates to officially kill off Mike Huckabee`s campaign.  (Video.)

Now that the Republicans have settled on a nominee, the task becomes even trickier for the Democrats. With the race wide open, continued pointscoring between Senator Obama and Senator Clinton would only benefit Senator McCain.

Bitter fight

Heading into the votes, Senator Clinton hurled a barrage of attacks portraying her charismatic younger rival as inexperienced, duplicitous and lacking in the strength needed to take on the Republicans in November`s general election.

She brushed off suggestions that poor performances today could mean the end of the line for her campaign.  "I don`t think like that," she said.

"We think we are going to do really well here in Texas and Ohio, I am feeling really optimistic," she said outside a school in Houston, before flying to Dallas and then to Ohio to await the results.

Asked about her plans for the campaign going forward, the New York senator said: "We are going to get through today, and we are going to see how we do. I believe in taking things one day at a time in politics, as in life."

But Senator Obama has said his rival should be starting to make some tough calls about her future.  "What my head tells me is that we`ve got a very sizeable delegate lead that is going to be hard to overcome," he said.

Senator Obama called the fusillade a "kitchen-sink strategy" that would not change the facts on the ground - he has a clear lead among Democratic delegates which Senator Clinton could only have overhauled with landslide victories today and beyond.

Those landslides did not come, but the difference in moods at the rival campaign functions shows the impact of the Clinton wins.

Senator Obama had been building momentum in the campaign since he started his winning streak after Super Tuesday on February 6 (Australian time) and some of his most prominent backers had been calling on Senator Clinton to bow out for the sake of Democratic unity.

D Day

Even former president Bill Clinton has said his wife must win both Ohio and Texas to sustain her dream of following him into the Oval Office.

But Senator Obama has been on the defensive, with Senator Clinton attacking his national security credentials and alleging that he is hood-winking voters with his professed opposition to the North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA).

Senator Obama`s campaign hit back, mocking Senator Clinton`s argument that her "35 years of experience" including her time as first lady qualified her to be president.
