Last election, Labor (under M. Latham) promised that if I vote Liberal that I'd be getting Costello as PM!I held onto Labor's promise and voted Liberal.I am utterly disappointed that Labor broke their election promise.

FOREIGN Minister Alexander Downer and Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull have denied reports they told Prime Minister John Howard it would be best if he resigned as the Liberal Party leader.

Sky News reported both senior ministers had spoken to Mr Howard, but did not tell him to go.

"But not telling him to go, saying their view is that it would be better for the Government if he did go," Sky said.

Sky - which said it had two seperate sources - said neither Mr Downer nor Mr Turnbull would confirm that they had called on the Prime Minister to stand aside.

A plan by Mr Howard to resign this week was widely canvassed within Liberal circles over recent days, according to a party source.

It is understood alternative candidates for his seat of Bennelong were being discussed.

However, Mr Howard was strongly insisting yesterday that he would lead the party to the election over the coming months.

Both Minister`s have denied the report and a spokesman for Mr Howard said he had spoken to Mr Downer`s office, which denied the sentiments contained in it.

"I`m just up in Mr Downer`s office. They are denying that that has occurred," the spokesman said.

"I`ve just spoken to Alexander Downer`s office and they have been strongly denying it and so have Mr Turnbull`s office.

"Why would Mr Turnbull have a role?"

He said there was no reason why Mr Howard`s itinerary today, including welcoming Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to Parliament, would not go ahead as planned.

Senate President Alan Ferguson, speaking on 4BC radio,  today backed Mr Howard`s leadership.

"His job is rock sold, yeah,"  Mr Ferguson said.

Sky reported that other Cabinet sources said more and more ministers believed it would be better if Mr Howard left, Sky said.

Mr Howard discussed his future at length with his family on Sunday, Sky said.

But he has previously resisted any pressure to hand over the leadership reins, inisisting that it would be he who would lead the party to the federal election, and not the man expected to take over from him eventually, Treasurer Peter Costello.

Health Minister Tony Abbott said last night that "rational self-interest" among Coalition MPs would ensure Mr Howard would stay leader despite the Federal Government`s miserable polling.

That may not be enough to save Mr Howard.

An ACNielsen poll published yesterday gave Labor a 57-43 lead two-party preferred over the Government and Labor leader Kevin Rudd was preferred prime minister by 52 per cent to Mr Howard`s 39 per cent.

Mr Abbott said yesterday that Mr Downer, regarded as the one who would tap Mr Howard on the shoulder if his time had come, would stay loyal.

"It would be out of character for him to do anything other than stick with the man who has been such a friend and ally of his throughout Alexander`s career," he said.
