BARACK Obama is preparing to anoint himself the winner of the long-running contest with Hillary Clinton at the close of the Kentucky and Oregon primaries tomorrow.

Senator Obama spent the weekend campaigning in Oregon, drawing a record crowd of 75,000 in Portland yesterday, in the hope a big victory in the state would allow him to declare the start of the general election campaign against senator John McCain.

After Kentucky and Oregon hold their primaries, the Illinois senator expects to clinch a majority of elected Democratic delegates, one of the last remaining milestones in the race against Senator Clinton, The Australian reports.

In a highly symbolic move, Senator Obama is not planning to spend the election night in either state, heading instead to Iowa - the scene of his triumph in the year`s debut Democratic contest, which badly damaged Senator Clinton`s aura.

The huge crowd gathered on the banks of the Willamette River in Portland yesterday to see Senator Obama. "Wow! Wow! Wow!" were his first words, as he surveyed the multitude.

Previously, his campaign`s biggest crowd was when he spoke to 35,000 on Independence Mall in Philadelphia.

Senator Obama predicted a victory in Oregon, saying he thought the delegates from the win would "put us over the top".

According to his campaign, Senator Obama needs 17 more pledged delegates to reach a majority of the pledged delegates - not including the Democratic super delegates who can vote for either candidate at the Democratic National Convention in August.
