HILLARY Clinton has vowed to go the distance in the marathon White House race, rejecting critics who argue the only way she can beat rival Barack Obama is to use the "Tonya Harding" option.

Senator Clinton said she was not going anywhere despite increasing calls from within Democratic Party ranks for her to bow out of the election.

A Gallup poll has provided evidence that the increasingly nasty and protracted nominating battle between the pair is alienating the Democratic Party`s voter base.

The poll showed that 28 per cent of her supporters said they would vote for Republican nominee John McCain if the former first lady missed out on the Democratic nomination for the November election.

Almost 20 per cent of Senator Obama`s supporters indicated they too would vote Republican if he was not the Democratic nominee.

The worrying signs for Democrats came as an unnamed party official told the American ABC network that the only path for Senator Clinton to secure the presidential nomination was to use the "Tonya Harding" option, which refers to damaging Senator Obama badly enough to undermine his electability.

In 1994 the disgraced American figure skater was involved in a conspiracy to kneecap rival Nancy Kerrigan ahead of the Winter Olympics.

But Senator Obama said he wanted to ensure the tone of the nominating campaign against Senator Clinton "creates the situation where Democrats are going to win in November".

Many political analysts argue it is almost mathematically impossible for Senator Clinton to become the Democratic nominee, and it is now Senator Obama`s race to lose.

But her husband, former US president Bill Clinton, made it clear that his wife would not bow out, saying "my family`s not big on quitting - you probably noticed that".

Speaking in West Virginia, he said: "If a politician doesn`t want to get beat up, he shouldn`t run for office. If a football player doesn`t want to get tackled, doesn`t want to risk the occasional clip, he shouldn`t put the pads on."

The next critical contest is on April 22 in Pennsylvania where polls show Senator Clinton with a wide lead on Senator Obama, but she trails in the all-important delegate count.
