Russian drone crashes in Georgia

1.10.2008

AN unmanned Russian reconnaissance drone crashed near a Russian-controlled buffer zone around Georgia`s rebel region of South Ossetia, Georgia`s interior ministry said today.

"Yesterday (Tuesday), a Russian unmanned reconnaissance plane fell in the village of Odzisi, near Akhalgori," Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili said.

"The debris of the drone has been found by Georgian police."

Georgia last week said it had shot down a Russian drone near the South Ossetia buffer zone, patrolled by Russian forces since last month`s conflict over the region. But Moscow has denied the claim.

Russia and Georgia have repeatedly accused each other of sending drones on reconnaissance missions over and around South Ossetia and another rebel region, Abkhazia, in violation of ceasefire agreements.

European Union observers deployed in Georgia today to monitor a ceasefire and oversee a Russian troop pull-back after the August war in the Caucasus state.

Months of mounting tensions erupted into full-scale hostilities between Georgia and Russia in early August over the Moscow-backed rebel province of South Ossetia.
