Man strangled former colleague in office

Man strangled former colleague in office

30.09.2008

A MAN has been jailed for life for murdering a former work colleague who had disturbed him trying to steal laptops from offices he had shared with her before he was sacked.

Cathy Marlow, 28, had gone to work on a Saturday in January last year to catch up with some work after coming back from holiday.

But in doing so she disturbed 34-year-old Matthew Fagan who had returned to his former workplace in Stockwell, south London, to steal the laptops, nine months after being sacked.

Fagan strangled Ms Marlow, from Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, with a scarf her mother had knitted for her, the Old Bailey had heard.

Fagan, an American national, was found guilty of murder by a unanimous verdict and was told to serve a minimum term of 26 years by Judge Brian Barker, the Press Association newsagency reported.

"Against a man of your size and strength she would have stood no chance," Judge Barker told him.
Marlow`s brother Brendan was one of several family members in court to hear the verdict and in a victim impact statement he told the jury how his mother had died from cancer just months after her daughter`s murder.

"The man who carried out this crime is as cruel as he is callous," said Marlow.
