FORMER Australian Medical Association president Dr Mukesh Haikerwal suffered serious head injuries after an alleged assault.

Dr Haikerwal, 47, suffered serious injuries after he was allegedly bashed on Lyons Rd in Williamstown about 11pm on Saturday night.

Police are investigating the assault which they believe stemmed from an armed robbery but have been unable to interview Dr Haikerwal because of the extent of his injuries.

Dr Haikerwal was taken to the Western Hospital in Footscray with serious injuries.

AMA Victoria president Doug Travers said Dr Haikerwal had undergone neurosurgery at the hospital to remove blood clots from his brain and was put in an induced coma.

"They woke him up this morning. He`s in a serious condition, but he`s talking and knows who I am and is moving all his limbs," Dr Travers said.

"We expect he will make a full recovery but it`s always difficult to tell with head injuries."

AMA president Dr Rosanna Capolingua said the association was shocked to hear of the alleged bashing.

"I was deeply saddened to hear of the awful attack on Mukesh," she said.

"Mukesh is a very generous person and has readily given so much of his time, passion and commitment to improving patient care in Australia - he is admired by patients, colleagues and policy-makers alike.

"He is in our hearts and prayers today and in the days ahead."

Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon wished Dr Haikerwal a speedy recovery.

"Mukesh is also an extremely gentle and kind individual - it is difficult to imagine anyone less deserving of such a vicious attack,`` Ms Roxon said.

"Our thoughts are with Mukesh`s wife Karyn and their three sons, Suresh, Ajaya and Jeevan, at this extremely difficult time.``

Dr Haikerwal was president of the AMA Victoria from 2001 to 2003 and federal president of the AMA from 2005 to 2007.

He is a member of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission.
