Fashion main event at Brownlow

Brownlow favourite Gary Ablett`s partner Lauren Phillips wore a strapless gown in watermelon with silver trim.

THE AFL`s Brownlow Medal night is officially about crowning the league`s best and fairest player but tonight`s red carpet parade suggested otherwise.

As in previous years, women`s fashion easily stole the show, with the blokes playing it straight in dark suits.

Classic vintage looks mingled with more revealing choices - and large amounts of fake tan.

Glamour gowns with trains were favoured by many footballers` wives and girlfriends while cocktail length dresses were also popular.

Hues of white, cream and silver dominated the entrance to Melbourne`s Crown Casino.

But there were a few "copycat" cases of watermelon pervading the red carpet.

Brownlow favourite Gary Ablett`s partner Lauren Phillips wore a strapless gown in watermelon with silver trim, by Melbourne label Thurley.

The frock made an impression but was cut short by retiring Saint Robert Harvey`s wife Danielle who followed Phillips` lead down the carpet in an almost identical number.

North Melbourne player Brent Harvey`s wife Shayne McClintock also opted to wear the shade but chose a backless approach fringed with black peacock detail.

Former West Coast captain Chris Judd`s partner Rebecca Twigley turned heads as usual in a white dress reminiscent of "that" red one from 2004, split up the front with a plunging neckline and "barely there" back.

It was held together only with a pearl-studded belt and matching shoes.

Judd`s former teammate and 2005 Brownlow winner Ben Cousins also made an appearance accompanied by mother Steph who wore an embroidered black evening gown with a sheer black jacket.

Cats captain Tom Harley`s fiancee Felicity Percival graced the carpet in a green Moss & Spy number that straddled elegant and sexy.

St Kilda footballer Luke Ball`s partner Amy Pollard also attracted the limelight in a full length gown with a silver and black bodice.

While the real party might not be until Saturday the ladies certainly gave the impression they were getting started early.
